Dear Friends,
The Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia, is one of the world’s most challenging regions for Christians. Believers face severe and sometimes even deadly persecution from governments, extremist groups, and even their own families and communities.
This past month we witnessed this reality firsthand in Djibouti when twelve M3-trained brothers and sisters were arrested, jailed, and swiftly deported. Evangelical Christianity is legally restricted in this country and anyone who converts from Islam faces heavy governmental and societal ostracization and persecution.
In the neighboring country of Eritrea, often referred to as the “North Korea of Africa,” evangelical Christianity is also strictly forbidden. The totalitarian government monitors all religious practices and Christians are never allowed to share their faith. If discovered, believers face arrest, torture, and indefinite detention in brutal military camps and, by some reports, solitary confinement in underground shipping containers. Those who follow Jesus and fellowship with one another in this country have to do so in complete secrecy.
